one firm they can trust.

By integrating plan administrations functions from Benefit Strategies with investment planning, fund manager evaluation and performance monitoring from United Income, we maximize the growth and success of your plan while minimizing the time and cost usually required to perform these functions separately.

A Little History

Forty years ago, Donald J. Potter, Jr. founded the first privately owned, fee-only retirement plan consulting firm in Southwest Virginia. Benefit Strategies offered employers an alternative to the bank trust departments that dominated this market. By focusing on new plan designs and the administrative team to support them, Benefit Strategies was a pioneer in establishing 401(k) plans, multi-tiered defined benefit plans, and cross-tested profit sharing plans, all requiring more specialized expertise.

As clients grew dissatisfied with their investment providers, Don Potter established one of Virginia’s earliest investment management consulting firms. Affiliations created with Wilshire, Callan and Russell provided valuable training and resources to which only the largest plan sponsors previously had access. Mr. Potter also enrolled in the Chartered Financial Analyst curriculum to better understand the perspective, training and biases of the investment management profession. He developed one of the early selection and monitoring systems for 401(k) investment options, and collaborated in the design of the first personal asset allocation software that operated on a desktop computer, rather than on a mainframe.

In the early 1990’s, Benefit Strategies established one of Virginia’s first daily recordkeeping operations to support its open architecture efforts and provide plan sponsors with a wider assortment of fund options for their 401(k) plans.

Realizing that technology was the only viable and cost-effective way to provide retirement plan participants with the savings and investment advice they needed to adequately prepare for retirement, Don Potter merged his retirement consulting and investment advisory practices with United Income.  Similarly focused on the needs of retirees and retirement plan participants, United Income brings to our clients, nationally recognized, state-of-the-art financial planning and investment management technology.

Maintaining cutting edge solutions for our retirement plan clients continues to be our primary focus. Preparing clients for retirement with the best plan designs, investment offerings, resources and education has always been and will continue to be what drives us.
